Aion Guide December 25, 2009

1. Introduction

Mages are at once powerful and fragile, using crowd control skills or summons to keep enemies at a distance while using ranged magic spells to attack. If a high-risk offensive class that requires a lot of skill juggling sounds fun to you, than this path is your fit.

You will start the game in the Mage class with a spellbook as your weapon. At level 9 you will be given the Daeva quest, during the course of which you will be able to choose between the Sorcerer and the Spiritmaster as your specialization path (this is the same quest that gives you your wings). Upon completing the quest, your level will be set automatically to 10 in your new class.

The Sorcerer specialization follows a traditional mage path, further focusing on high damage magic spells and crowd control abilities such as sleep and shackles.
The Spiritmaster learns the ability to control spirit summons, and is the only pet controlling class in the game.

 2. Mage Base Stats

Strength: 90
Constitution: 90
Agility: 95
Accuracy: 95
Intelligence: 115
Spirit: 115

3 Sorcerer  [Quoted from site here]

Damage Dealer, Crowd Control
Sorcerers deal high amounts of magic damage, and use numerous shackle and sleep skills that keep their opponents at a distance.
Comparable classes from other games: WoW Mage, L2 Spellsinger/Sorcerer
Popular Builds
Sorcerers are all about the magic damage, so if you’ve got the ninja skills to keep your fragile self alive, then by all means max it out. Aion’s resident ‘glass cannon’ class is especially weak to physical attacks though, even more so than you may be used to in other MMOs, so you might decide to trade in some of that damage for HP.

1. Max Damage Build
Gear: +Intelligence Cloth Armour (bonus available on certain Abyss armour)
Enhancements: +Magic Spell Damage
Cooking trade skill highly recommended for +Intelligence food

2. Survivability Build
Gear: + HP Cloth Armour (bonus available on certain Abyss armour)
Enhancements: + Max HP, + Max MP
Cooking trade skill highly recommended for +Intelligence food

4. Spiritmaster

Damage Dealer
Spiritmasters summon elemental spirits or imbue it within themselves, and is the only summoner class in Aion. They are unique in their role flexibility which can change depending on the spirit they use, but unless in a small casual party Spiritmasters will most likely take a damage dealing role.
Comparable classes from other games: WoW Warlock, L2 Warlock/ES/PS

Popular Builds
Because so much of their abilities come from summons, Spiritmasters are the least gear-influenced class in the game.
With the smallest HP pool in the game however, PvP players will want to get some padding on their health bar to outlast their enemies.

1. Survivability Build
Gear: + HP Cloth Armour (bonus available on certain Abyss armour)

Enhancements: + Max HP
Stigma: Enhanced Health

1. Fire Elemental
2. Wind Elemental
3. Earth Elemental
4. Water Elemental

6. Current State: CBT3

Current State of Sorcerers

Sorcerer players have always been expressing mixed opinions on the class since the beginning of closed beta. Many players complain of mana downtimes and feel frustrated that their low HP and cloth armour make them easy targets in ganks and mass PvP.

Most will agree, though, that in PvP Sorcerers are second to .. well, second to rangers..
In any case, the sorcerer is a strong PvP class. The combination of sleeps and nukes, or shackles/pushbacks and nukes (depending on your playstyle) mean that as long as you’re paying attention and constantly watching your back, you have a very good chance at coming out on top.

Mixed reviews also mean that Sorcerers haven’t been on NCsoft’s radar as a class to neither nerf nor boost — which, as Spiritmaster players would tell you (and L2 vets will tell you) is a positive thing.

Current State of Spiritmasters

The story of Spiritmasters is a bitter one, from their CBT2 glory to their CBT3 demise.
It’s hard to imagine that in CBT2, Spiritmasters were regarded as the most powerful class in Aion – fast to level, great in PvP. The summons always had terrible AI but their high damage and utility made up for the lacks.
Unfortunately, the nerf hammer came down hard, and in CBT3 they were reduced to becoming the least played class in the game. Worst part was, the summons still had the IQ of ‘Starcraft dragoons’ (whatever that means.. I’m like the only Korean to have never played SC).

It’s hard to say what open beta will look like for Spiritmasters. Although NCsoft’s lead developer has said that there will be changes, balancing for summoning classes is notoriously tricky and it’s likely that NCsoft will tread carefully as to not repeat their mistake in CBT2. As possibly the most complex class in Aion, however, there will always be players that are up for the challenge that this class presents.

Ten Failures of AION December 14, 2009

Filed under: mmorpg — mmorpglover @ 5:23 am

Through more than ten years of development, today online games are available in a wide variety. They are just like the stars in the sky, among which, AION: The Tower of Eternity (“AION”) and World of Warcraft (“WoW”) are the most shining ones. And in the online game market of year 2009, AION and WoW WLK expansion pack are undoubtedly the two heavyweights.

After WoW gained global popularity, in China there emerged some MMOGs claimed to be “WoW killers”. Dungeons & Dragons Online was one of those in early days. However, its publisher in China Shanda shut down all the games servers and stopped its operation on July 31st last year. Then Age of Conan, a game developed by Norway based Funcom, was completely defeated by WoW. This year, the battle between AION, a game developed by South Korean game tycoon NCsoft, and WoW took place in China.

AION, which was claimed to be the most system-demanding game with the largest operation capacity ever, is a big title Shanda imported from South Korea to grab market share from WoW. From the very beginning, Shanda placed high expectations on AION, hoping it will defeat WoW. It listed Aion as one of its major projects this year. A few days ago, Shanda even put on a so-called “the world’s largest online game advertisement” on Shanghai Jinmao Tower. The developers of AION put forward a lot of new concepts as well, hoping to establish a game world that is different from any other MMOGs. According to them, the game is neither sci-fic nor fantasy, and is not too strange to be understood. We can see how the concept was conveyed through some of its screenshots, concept arts and trailers.

This April, AION officially made a challenge against WoW in China. Before its open beta, AION had already gained feverish popularity among Chinese players. A large number of players, some of whom are WoWers, had very high expectations on Aion. During the second closed beta this April, everyday there would be thousands of players waiting on the server. This kind of phenomenon continued until it went into open beta. Now, two months have passed, and we began to feel that the popularity of AION has remarkably cooled off. There are many reasons for the change, but one of them is probably because Shanda started to charge money for Aion. Shanda’s promotions for Aion were so successful that many players were attracted to try AION out. However, most of them came for its fame only and a majority of players chose to leave after it began to charge money, which, to some extent at least, indicates that this game is not attractive enough.

Besides, from the discussions on some major game forums in China, we can see a great many players were disappointed at Aion. Initially they had high expectations but after playing it, they feel frustrated. They feel AION is an apple of Sodom, and it is by no means comparable to WoW in terms of classes, scenes, instances, quests or gameplay. They even called AION “the King of Kimchi”.

As a matter of fact, while the online game market in China is still in upsurge, the market share of South Korean games has been shrinking. South Korean games, which used to account for half of the market share, are now being replaced gradually by western and Chinese games such as WoW, XYJ Online, and TLBB Online, forcing Korean games’ market share in China to decline stably.

Issue of Aion in Game Informer December 13, 2009

Filed under: mmorpg — mmorpglover @ 7:39 am

>>>Quote from this site, more information.

This month Game Informer magazine, in their much ballyhooed 200th issue, had a one page article on Aion, “Bait and Switch: Aion launches with equal parts fun, grind, and gold spam”, by Adam Biessener.

The article was actually mostly positive, and remember that by the time it hits the newsstands the content is 2-3 months old, but they had a few things to say worth noting.

– Aion has the best directed PvP endgame available today.
-The problem is that you have to play several dozen hours of a mediocre World of Warcraft clone to gain access (to the endgame).
-The polish and iteration shows. Even Blizzard could learn from some of the little touches in Aion
-Even with my gripes about the game, it serves the chosen audience (hardcore PvPers) well.

They also had some nasty things to say about the gold spam and lack of NCSoft response, but remember the age of the article.

Although many parts of the current issue can be read online I could not find an online page for this specific article.

The Spiritmaster December 10, 2009

Filed under: mmorpg — mmorpglover @ 1:35 pm

The Spiritmaster

The Spiritmaster is a Daeva born under the Star of Spirits, and is able to control spirits of Water, Fire, Earth, and Wind. It can call upon these spirits to attack directly, but it can also use indirect tactics such as borrowing the strength of the spirits to weaken an enemy or to inflict fear.

The Elysean Spiritmasters follow the teachings Kaisinel, the Lord of Mirage, while Asmodian Spiritmasters serve Lumiel, the Lady of Wisdom.

Like the Sorcerer, the Spritmaster uses magic to control the elements of nature: Earth, Wind, Water, and Fire. However,  the method of control is much different. Rather than casting spells composed of these elements, the Spiritmaster controls the spirits inhabiting them.

Spiritmasters have less attack magic compared to Sorcerers, making it difficult to directly attack their opponent. Rather than focusing on direct combat with an opponent the Spiritmaster uses elemental spirits to attack them.

This article was quoted from this site, more information>
The four types of spirits available are very different. Their attacks and defenses are based on the elements they represent. So, depending on the situation, you must summon the right spirit to effectively control the battle.

Another characteristic of the Spiritmaster is the fact that it possesses numerous debuff type skills. These skills inhibit the mobility of a foe while allowing the Spiritmaster to maintain distance. However, like the mesmerizing skills of the Sorcerer, these skills produce high amounts of enmity.

The Spiritmaster’s low health and defense require it to maintain total control during combat. However, while it is not as destructive as the Sorcerer, its pets and various movement impairing spells make it versatile in both solo and party play.

The Spring Festival – Chinese New Year’s Day December 8, 2009

Filed under: Life — mmorpglover @ 2:55 am

The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. All people living away from home go back, becoming the busiest time for transportation systems of about half a month from the Spring Festival. Airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations are crowded with home returnees.

The Spring Festival falls on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month, often one month later than the Gregorian calendar. It originated in the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600 BC-c. 1100 BC) from the people’s sacrifice to gods and ancestors at the end of an old year and the beginning of a new one.

Strictly speaking, the Spring Festival starts every year in the early days of the 12th lunar month and will last till the mid 1st lunar month of the next year. Of them, the most important days are Spring Festival Eve and the first three days. The Chinese government now stipulates people have seven days off for the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Many customs accompany the Spring Festival. Some are still followed today, but others have weakened.

On the 8th day of the 12th lunar month, many families make laba porridge, a delicious kind of porridge made with glutinous rice, millet, seeds of Job’s tears, jujube berries, lotus seeds, beans, longan and gingko.

The 23rd day of the 12th lunar month is called Preliminary Eve. At this time, people offer sacrifice to the kitchen god. Now however, most families make delicious food to enjoy themselves.

After the Preliminary Eve, people begin preparing for the coming New Year. This is called “Seeing the New Year in”.

Store owners are busy then as everybody goes out to purchase necessities for the New Year. Materials not only include edible oil, rice, flour, chicken, duck, fish and meat, but also fruit, candies and kinds of nuts. What’s more, various decorations, new clothes and shoes for the children as well as gifts for the elderly, friends and relatives, are all on the list of purchasing.

Before the New Year comes, the people completely clean the indoors and outdoors of their homes as well as their clothes, bedclothes and all their utensils.

Then people begin decorating their clean rooms featuring an atmosphere of rejoicing and festivity. All the door panels will be pasted with Spring Festival couplets, highlighting Chinese calligraphy with black characters on red paper. The content varies from house owners’ wishes for a bright future to good luck for the New Year. Also, pictures of the god of doors and wealth will be posted on front doors to ward off evil spirits and welcome peace and abundance.

The Chinese character “fu” (meaning blessing or happiness) is a must. The character put on paper can be pasted normally or upside down, for in Chinese the “reversed fu” is homophonic with “fu comes”, both being pronounced as “fudaole.” What’s more, two big red lanterns can be raised on both sides of the front door. Red paper-cuttings can be seen on window glass and brightly colored New Year paintings with auspicious meanings may be put on the wall.

People attach great importance to Spring Festival Eve. At that time, all family members eat dinner together. The meal is more luxurious than usual. Dishes such as chicken, fish and bean curd cannot be excluded, for in Chinese, their pronunciations, respectively “ji“, “yu” and “doufu,” mean auspiciousness, abundance and richness. After the dinner, the whole family will sit together, chatting and watching TV. In recent years, the Spring Festival party broadcast on China Central Television Station (CCTV) is essential entertainment for the Chinese both at home and abroad. According to custom, each family will stay up to see the New Year in.

Waking up on New Year, everybody dresses up. First they extend greetings to their parents. Then each child will get money as a New Year gift, wrapped up in red paper. People in northern China will eat jiaozi, or dumplings, for breakfast, as they think “jiaozi” in sound means “bidding farewell to the old and ushering in the new”. Also, the shape of the dumpling is like gold ingot from ancient China. So people eat them and wish for money and treasure.

Southern Chinese eat niangao (New Year cake made of glutinous rice flour) on this occasion, because as a homophone, niangao means “higher and higher, one year after another.” The first five days after the Spring Festival are a good time for relatives, friends, and classmates as well as colleagues to exchange greetings, gifts and chat leisurely.

Burning fireworks was once the most typical custom on the Spring Festival. People thought the spluttering sound could help drive away evil spirits. However, such an activity was completely or partially forbidden in big cities once the government took security, noise and pollution factors into consideration. As a replacement, some buy tapes with firecracker sounds to listen to, some break little balloons to get the sound too, while others buy firecracker handicrafts to hang in the living room.

The lively atmosphere not only fills every household, but permeates to streets and lanes. A series of activities such as lion dancing, dragon lantern dancing, lantern festivals and temple fairs will be held for days. The Spring Festival then comes to an end when the Lantern Festival is finished.

China has 56 ethnic groups. Minorities celebrate their Spring Festival almost the same day as the Han people, and they have different customs.
